Abstract

The KERIS Union Catalog is the largest bibliographic database in Korea. It has over 5.7 million bibliographic records and at present 330 university libraries are participating in shared cataloging services. The database, however, includes various errors and a large number of duplicate data because separate databases from many university libraries were merged without proper quality control in a short period. This study intends to find error data types by analyzing dissertation bibliographic data. The results show that error data are mainly caused by input errors, and the mistakes in using MARC formats and cataloging rules.

Abstract

The present study, on the basis of a premise that reference lists are one of the social products, reflecting various social environments of their own society, was made as part of an attempt to explore the co-occurrence phenomenon of both Korean and Non-Korean literatures occurred within the Korean references. 321 authors (articles) of 43 issues of 24 Korean journals on Social Sciences were surveyed on research channels and citation motivations and their 11358 references were analyzed. The findings are as follows : 1) The extent of the co-occurrence was that Non-Korean literatures were more 1.9 times (65.3%) cited than Korean ones and English (61.5%)-American (50.4%) predominancy was heavily found. 2) Research channel, worked as an indicator of the identity of researcher as well as the source of research ideas was most Non-Korean channel orientedness (55.8%). 3) Citation motivations were significantly depended on whether Korean or Non-Korean literatures and Non-Korean literatures were cheifly cited to be concetual motivations than other motivations. 4) Research channel among variables was worked as a main effect predicting major citation motivations on Non-Korean literatures. Finally, this study is very suggestive : 1) It might be a new approach and interpretation by adopting citation motivations to exlpore a processs of knowledge production of researchers 2) Partly, it proved empirically the relationship of knowledge producted by Korean researchers to Non-Korean knowledge through the analysis of citation motivations.

Abstract

School libraries are one of the essential parts for high quality education. The Seventh Educational Curriculum emphasizes the development of creative and autonomous students who can solve problems in a self-directed way. The Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development come into forcing the installation of school digital library since 2001. Also, the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development has prensented the Master Plan of School’s Activation in July 2002. In this situation, the reserch and discussion on effective model of school digital library are very important. Thus, This study aims to design a model of school digital library differentiated School’s sizes depending on primary and secondary school’s current status. This study is proposed 4 facility model of school digital library based differentiated school’s sizes and designed A-type, B-Type model on individual model.

Abstract

The National Department of Education approved the ‘Information and Library’ Curriculum which contained the educational role of school libraries. This curriculum contained and integrated the library guidance, reading education and cooperative instruction that teacher-librarians have taught. The school education has basically been led, based on curriculum. Therefore, it is important to have all kinds of educational activities related to the school library approved as school curriculum. This study is to introduce Base Connectionism, Base Integrationism, Top 456 Approach, and Curriculum-Based Approach, based on ‘Information and Library’ curriculum.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify several factors necessary to the curriculum development of the archives and records management in Korea by analyzing archival programs of the Schools of Library and Information Science(SLIS) in the U.S.A. Name of the schools, programs and their degrees, credits, required and elective courses, practice, research, facilities, and SAA guidelines of graduate archival programs are compared by analyzing websites and the literature review. There are a few LIS schools that concentrate archival education and most of the archival programs don’t cover all of the core archival knowledge suggested in the SAA guidelines. The reason of these situation is considered as a limitation of the archival education as special programs in the LIS schools. In conclusion, the core curriculum of archival science should include history and preservation of archives, archives and records management, information technology, management principles, practicum, and research/thesis. And a lot of cooperated research and conversation between educational institutions and practical fields are required.

Abstract

This study is to investigate extensively the complaint responses of the academic library users, with a special regard to those in Daegu Metropolitan City and in Kyungpook Province. It selects and analyzes empirically some of the antecedents of the complaining behaviors including perceived severity of dissatisfaction, perception of free use, attitude toward complaining, cost of the complaining, likelihood of success, product/service importance, external attributions and loyalty; and complaint responses including exit, voice(redress seeking), negative word-of-mouth and third party complaints, of the academic library users, based on the theoretical backgrounds. Final data through questionaries are obtained from 582 unsatisfied academic library users in 5 universities in those areas, 542 of them analysed with SPSS 11.0 for Windows.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify an acquisition material duplication rate among three academic libraries for developing an academic library network. Three academic libraries located in Gyonggi-do, Korea were selected for data collection. The acquisition lists in both 2000 and 2001 were compared and analyzed between two libraries respectively. The results show that the duplication rate is 0.4% in 2000 and 2.8% in 2001 between medium size libraries, and 1.33%, 1.11% in 2000 and 3.63%, 3.88% in 2001 between a big size library and medium size libraries. These tell us that a big library can get benefit from a library network with medium size libraries.

Abstract

To bridge digital divide, the nation’s information services should be focused their attentions on people with disabilities. According to this philosophy, the public library’s services for people with disabilities should be mainstreamed into its regular services. Providing equitable access for people with disabilities to public library’s resources, facilities, and services, the standard library services policy or guideline should be developed as soon as possible. A draft in this papers may be helpful to a policy maker for public library services for people with disabilities

Abstract

Information visualization in information retrieval is a creating tool that enables us to observe, manipulate, search, navigate, explore, filter, discover, understand, interact with large volumes of data for more rapidly and far more effectively to discover hidden patterns. The focus of this study is to investigate and analyze information visualization techniques in information retrieval system in the three-schematic levels. In result, it was found that first, scientific data, documents, and retrieval result information are visualized through various techniques. Second, information visualization techniques which facilitate navigation and interaction are zoom and pan, focus+context techniques, incremental exploration, and clustering. Third, the visual metaphors used by the visualization systems are presented in the linear structure, hierarchy structure, network structure, and vector scatter structure.

Abstract

The purpose of this study lies in analyzing the limitations and weakness of the existing PDL and proposing the principles for the development of a user-oriented PDL. The user group of PDL that we want to develop is university students. To this end, we investigate the information seeking behavior of the sampled user group, especially, their information needs, information use patterns, and information management patterns. Based on the results, we conceptually propose the systems specifications which the university students wish to be included in the PDL.

Abstract

Library and information science(LIS) research has been dominated by functionalistic orientation as one of the postulates of positivism. As a result, it has often been criticized that LIS research does not take into account the social, cultural, political, and economic contexts on which the theories and the practices of LIS are based. In this regard, this paper seeks to establish and apply critical inquiry through a review of the relevant aspects of critical theory and application of those insights to current research and practice in LIS. Connections of LIS research to relevant political, social and economic issues are particularly stressed.

Abstract

This study explores what kinds of strategies are appropriate or needed for the academic librarians to upgrade their skills in the digital age. Printed and electronic sources related to this topic are gathered and examined, and communication with some academic librarians in USA is used for this study. The skills suggested in this paper mostly come from business-oriented concepts like Learning Organization, Knowledge Management, Team Management, Customer-Oriented Services, and Change Management. As a result of this study, it is found that these skills can be used without much difficulties in academic libraries to improve their services. However academic librarians need to keep in mind the core values of academic libraries as an academic forum and non-profit organization when they endeavor to provide better services for customers in the digital age.
