Abstract

A national library is a library specifically established and administrated by the government of a nation to serve as the repository of knowledge and information for that country. National libraries are generally a county's designated national repository, collecting literature published in the country, in the language of the country, or about the country they represent. In case of advanced countries, national libraries have more than one branches at many different locations. Its system is called the distributed national library system. But the National Library of Korea maintains a centralized library system located in Seoul. This research which it tries to pay attention in this problem point extracted a logical ground and suggested the mid-long term basic plan(S-shaved Branch Library Project) for a National Library of Korea to convert and reconstruct from centralized system to centralized-distributed system.

Abstract

Prior to the 1980's, reappraisal and deaccessioning were considered as an “anti-archival” activity. Recently, however, many archivists have come to realize that a reappraisal and deaccessioning is essential to providing better access to more important records and to strengthen and refine holdings. To develop a program with strong and well-focused holding appropriate to the purpose and environments of archives, archives have to carry out systematic and continuing procedure to reevaluate past appraisal. This study explores the various main issues and opinions with regard to reappraisal and deaccessioning and then, suggests the reappraisal principles and deaccessioning procedures such as return of the materials to donor, transfer to more appropriate depository, destruction of the material.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate how the different types of reading instruction programs and reading methods influenced the creative ability and the self-directed learning ability. They were divided into two groups. Class A was taught to use “The Author-Reader-Inquirer Cycle”, which concentrated on the writing-centered reading program model. Class B was taught to use “The Literature Circles”, which concentrated on the speaking and listening-centered reading program model. After reading instruction, the creative ability and the self-directed learning ability increased. The writing-centered reading instruction was more effective than the speaking and listening-centered reading instruction. The reading instruction during the long-period was more effective than that during the short-period. The “intensive reading” among the reading methods had a significant influence on the creative ability and the self-directed learning ability.

Abstract

In recent days North Korean refugees, who hope to move into and settle in South Korea, have been rapidly increasing. However their adaptation to South Korea is reported to have not been so much successful as they expected. Considering such situations, this study attempts to investigate their information needs and behavior. North Korean refugees have various and strong information needs for settlement and daily life. The strongest were information needs related to economic problem, specifically job and business related information needs. It was followed by information needs related to social welfare, health and security, child care and education, and North Korean situation. In order to meet their information needs, North Korean refugees were heavily dependent on informal interpersonal information sources such as their family members, friends, and their own neighborhoods, as compared to such formal interpersonal information sources as public officers, social welfare agents, and NGOs members. Meanwhile, their usage of mass media such as TV, newspapers, and internet as information sources was also heavy. However the overall information environment surrounding them appeared to be relatively inferior to that of average South Koreans.

The purpose of this study is to make out a draft for the standard classification of the National Knowledge and Information Resources. As the result of the Study the standard classification system of the national knowledge and information resources, named “Knowledge Classification : KC" is suggested. KC consists of 3 classification systems : classification by subject, type of resources and type of media. The classification by subject has 12 main classes, and each main class has divisions. Main classes consist each of major discipline or group of related disciplines. The type of resources is classified by 10 types of content , likewise numbered 0-9, and the media of knowledge are classified by 8 types, likewise 0-7. In the practice the notation always consists of 2 characters and 2 digits. The first character designate main class and the second character designate division. The first number designate the type of resources and the second number designate the type of media.

Abstract

For the recent several years, there has been much interest in lexical semantic network. However, it seems to be very difficult to evaluate the effectiveness and correctness of it and invent the methods for applying it into various problem domains. In order to offer the fundamental ideas about how to evaluate and utilize lexical semantic networks, we developed two automatic word clustering systems, which are called system A and system B respectively. 68,455,856 words were used to learn both systems. We compared the clustering results of system A to thoseof system B which is extended by the lexical-semantic network. The system B is extended by reconstructing the feature vectors which are used the elements of the lexical-semantic network of 3,656 '-ha' verbs. The target data is the 'multilingual Word Net-CoreNet'.When we compared the accuracy of the system A and system B, we found that system B showed the accuracy of 46.6% which is better than that of system A, 45.3%.

Abstract

Recently, some bibliometric researchers tried to use the centrality analysis methods and the centrality measures which are standard tools in social network analysis. However the traditional centrality measures originated from social network analysis could not deal with weighted networks such as co-citation networks. In this study, new centrality measures for analyzing bibliometric networks with link weights are suggested and applied to three real network data, including an author co-citation network, a co-word network, and a website co-link network. The results of centrality analyses in these three cases can be regarded as promising the usefulness of suggested centrality measures, especially in analyzing the position and influence of each node in a bibliometric network.

Abstract

The purpose of this pilot study is to construct a searching thesaurus with word association test in the library and information science field and to confirm it's functionality as searching aids through query expansion experiments. The test results were analyzed to four types of relationship between stimulus words and response words, and the terms of association thesaurus were compared with descriptors of an existing thesaurus. The test results show that the word association test is a fruitful method to identify many related terms and narrower and equivalent terms in some degree to the stimulus terms. Furthermore, in the query expansion experiment, the performance of association thesaurus was better than that of an existing thesaurus, This result demonstrates that word association thesaurus can apply to query expansion.

Abstract

Grey literature is a non-public data only for nonprofit users. Some of the major grey literatures are technical report, proceeding, and thesis. For their promptitude, these sources are core of research and development. According to a research on the academic quality, grey literatures have higher usage rates than books--articles excluded. Also, the usage of foreign grey literature by librarians of research organization was investigated. The result was that over 90 percent of the researchers were demanding the original text of the foreign grey literature. In addition, librarians pointed out that the time-consuming problem and the lack of published information was a hindrance to using grey literature. For the centralized management of grey literature, they wanted an alliance structure.
