Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of the electronic information resources of humanities scholars in Korea and propose the planning of academic library and information services to serve their needs. To collect data, a postal survey was conducted during the period of November 2007 through January 2008. Out of 799 humanities scholars sampled from 25 universities, 132 responded with a completion rate of 16%. The major findings of this study are as follows: Firstly, the majority of humanities scholars distribute their time equally between research and education, and conduct independent research. Secondly, they use, to a certain degree, electronic information resources largely in text format, and depend upon the electronic collection of their academic libraries. Thirdly, with the exception of a couple of sources of electronic journal resources, the electronic resources that these humanities scholars regularly use vary so widely that none could be considered to be a common resource. Fourthly, they value the convenience of accessing and using electronic resources, but worry about the quality and scope of the contents. It is suggested that academic libraries (1) become the gateway for the electronic information that is available both inside and outside the library, (2) provide integrated search feature for and a ‘single sign on’ access to electronic resources, and (3) plan customized user education for specific subject fields in the humanities.

Abstract

Recently, the policies and management of public libraries have been evaluated by the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the central government, and Gyeonggi Province in Korea. However, these evaluations do not meet the international trends where simple input-output measures are being overtaken by outcomes calculating broad socio-economic values. Taking these facts into consideration, the main goal of this paper is to analyze the limitations of the recent library evaluation cases and to suggest some desirable directions for the evaluation of the socio-economic values (i.e., impact and benefits) of public libraries.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine 80 children's libraries in an effort to suggest some of the right directions for the development and management of children's library programs. A survey was conducted on 80 children's libraries in the nation, and the answer sheets from 55 libraries were gathered and analyzed to find out the extent of use, the major users, the book collections, budgets, the types of programs, the target audience of the programs, the terms of the programs, publicity, evaluation and factors determining the success or failure of the programs. In addition, 21 large children's libraries located in Seoul, Gyeongin, Incheon, Busan, North Chungcheong Province, South Jeolla Province and Jeju Island were visited, and the management were interviewed in order to decipher the types and management of the programs, their spatial construction, tie-ups or collaborations with relevant organizations and the utilization of volunteers. Finally, 29 foreign organizations were selected from six foreign countries including the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Japan and China, and the cases and states of their programs' management were checked through personal interviews.

Abstract

The study aims at presenting the development and management strategies of programs and services for multicultural families in libraries. The study proposed the principles and directions for the multicultural services which fit into certain types of libraries. The study also stated that principles and directions of these services should be adopted under a national initiative framework. The study examined multicultural services in domestic libraries. The study analyzed them by patterns, and described service programs that were exemplary. The study intended to aid in finding the appropriate management strategies for muticultural services in Korean libraries in the future.

Abstract

This study analyzed the usefulness of Web 2.0 techniques for improving archival information service. As a result, Web 2.0 was found to be useful for information service in National Archives of Korea(NAK). The results show that Open API is the most influential factor and RSS is the second-most useful factor for information services. These results can be used as a framework for developing Web 2.0-based information services in the NAK.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to construct a cooperation network for multicultural information services. It is suggested that a network for multicultural information helps those who limited information resources. Following investigation of the related information resources-422 online sites in 395 groups-it was found that the activity of non-public groups is higher than that of public groups and that all related groups offer various information services to multicultural people: education (24.5%), culture (18.4%), human rights (12.7%), general life (8.9%), and etc. The paper suggests the sharing of the information of internal related groups and collaboration with th embassies and cultural centers of East Asian country in order to construct a multicultural information service.

Abstract

To date, large print books have been published in Korea only for partially-sighted persons. However, as a recent explanation in the Reading Culture Promotion Act indicates, people who cannot use reading materials due to old age are now also considered to be reading-handicapped. This study is aimed at investigating the proper characteristics for the improvement of print publication for elderly people using data from a survey of 80 elderly persons. This study identified elderly people's preferences on the major characteristics of large format books such as font style, character size, line width, and page layout, derived from both quantitative and quantitative research methods.

Abstract

During the 21st century, the rapid changes in libraries and the information environment require the reassessment of the education and certification of library and information professionals in order to enhance their competencies. The purpose of this study is to elicit and propose preliminary models in order to improve the librarian certification system in Korea. In doing so, the perceptions among librarians and users were surveyed through an online questionnaire methodology. Based on the results of the survey and analyses, a mid- and a long-term plans for improving the overall library certification system have been proposed.

Abstract

This research attempted to examine the influence of the public library on our society and its relationship with social capital. For this research, a theoretical approach to the relationship was required. This approach enabled the research to analyze the type and range of the social capital being studied. In addition, this research emphasized that the social influence of public libraries was equivalent to the influence of social capital, based on the interaction between individual and community. The research outlined the mechanism by which public libraries create social capital. Finally the findings of this research were expected to help to develop an effective policy for public libraries.

Abstract

Following the Industrial Revolution, the United Kingdom achieved political, economic and social development earlier than other countries. The British people, who gained free time, wanted to have library services. Thus, the central government established the Public Libraries and Museums Act in 1850, which was the first in the world. The local government began to establish public libraries using tax income and provided free library services. At present, the operation and services of British public libraries have been developed and are exemplary, compared to South Korea and other developing countries. Thus, this study examined how the central and local governments in the U.K. developed their public library operations and services, and how they operate public libraries.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to investigate if bibliotherapy is effective for the retirees suffering from depression and enervation caused by early retirement in order to help them to accept their situations positively, lessen their illnesses and actively live new lives. The study used 15 people and executed 1:1 interview investigation among early retired employees from 45-years old to 56-years old. They were all inhabitants of the Kunsan area and visited the S University library, and used the S University library conference room for bibliotherapy. A. T. Beck's ‘Beck Depression Inventory’ (BDI) was used to collect the data for this research, and the before- and after-data analyses were performed.

Abstract

In order to utilize the operational metadata retrieval system which is based on the semantic association between the research outcomes of the Korean Research Memory (KRM), the systematic integration of the metadata of the research outcomes with the term data registry (DR) was required. This study presents the ontology which can be used effectively to support the KRM. It includes the concept modeling of the knowledge structure of research outcomes, information retrieval service modeling that applies an analytical approach to researchers' needs in conjunction with the term DR, and also some technical and administrative suggestions for future system management.

In this study, the present condition of 8 Open APIs for books, such as Naver, Daum, Aladdin, Amazon, Google, KERIS, LibraryThing, and OCLC, were compared and analyzed. In addition, the bibliographic records of 167 samples of visible ‘light & paraphotic’ (DDC 535) classifications were selected from the bibliographic records of the library of C university, and the effectiveness of the Open APIs were compared and analyzed. On the basis of the results of this analysis, 12 Open API application models, which were judged to be useful in expanding the function of the access point of the bibliographic records and enhancing the library catalog using Open API, were experimentally implemented. Various methods of augmenting access points of biblio- graphic records and expanded library catalogue were investigated using the unique identifier described in the KORMARC fields of 001, 010, 012, 020, 035, 246, 505, 520, 850, 856 for the integrated format for bibliographic data, and Open API. Finally, using Open API for the brief display and detailed display screen as a result of search of the OPAC of the sample bibliographic records, the devices for the expanding library catalog were implemented as examples.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop the indicators of user satisfaction for Korean public library evaluation. This is an attempt to overcome the inequality of indicators, which mainly consist of inputs and outputs. User satisfaction indicators are constructed through literature reviews and the prepared indicators are tested through a user survey of public libraries. Notably, the test is focused on the applicability of indicators for public libraries with a variety characteristics such as scale and operation organization. Based on the analysis of the results, this study suggests a total of 10 indicators.
