Abstract

Many students with disabilities at the university face difficulties in educational inequity, cultural isolation, information illiteracy, and discrimination in the broad range of campus activities. The biggest barrier is the lack or difficulty of access to knowledge and information needed for learning. Libraries, therefore, must not discriminate against students with disabilities and should ensure equal access to and use of information resources and services. This paper analyzed the satisfaction and requirements on facility and space services, direct and indirect services, total library service of students with disabilities based on the results of the survey and interview. This paper suggested ways to improve service satisfaction of students with disabilities in a university library.

Abstract

South Korea has fewer public libraries than other developed nations of OECD. This calls for a more diverse role of school libraries in the geographically isolated areas. School libraries should provides services for not only its students and faculty, but also the surrounding neighborhood as a part of cultural community. Based on the needs for an expanded role of school libraries, this research aims to identify the necessary factors for school libraries to provide services to their local residents. Two things should be identified for this research. First, we should confirm the necessity of policies that provide library services to local residents of school libraries. Second, we should propose a way to have the libraries as a part of cultural community where meet the information and cultural demand of their local residents. The study surveyed users, school principals and working-level staff members of cultural communities in order to study the two questions. These groups were from Uri-school Village Library, which is supported by the NHN Culture Foundation. Through the survey, the research confirmed the need for a consistent outside assistance, job training, open door policy for local residents and diverse library services in order for school libraries to serve their local community.

Abstract

This study analyzed the effect of metacognition to the information-seeking behaviors of 250 undergraduate students. For this, metacognition was examined by the inspection form that the Educational Psychology Programs of the Department of Education, at Seoul National University, developed in 2005. The information-seeking behaviors were examined by the observance of the established information-seeking performances and through a survey. As a result of the analysis, metacognition affected the items of the survey for the information-seeking behaviors, excluding one item. As metacognition is the cognitive characteristics acting after the cognitive process, it affected thinking activities that were conducted by the brain. In addition, metacognition affected the seeking process, the results of seeking, and the general information-seeking behaviors. Therefore, the study of metacognition is effective in the overall aspects of information-seeking behaviors including the seeking process, the results of seeking, and the general information-seeking behaviors.

Abstract

This research analyzed how smart devices and Social Network Service (SNS) change the construction of social capital. The results show that smart devices provide the foundation of expending ‘bridging social capital’ by offering various communication tools. SNS reinforces ‘bonding social capital’ and extends ‘bridging social capital’ by expanding social relationships from off-line to online and supporting the construction of online communities. In contrast, the use of SNS through smart devices is not related to the generation of social capital. However, it builds a multi-aspect social capital by making people participate in various social activities.

Abstract

The test instrument utilized to diagnose and evaluate a trainee’s ability are necessary for an effective information literacy education. Nevertheless, there is a lack of a standardized test instrument to comprehensively measure students’ information literacy. The purpose of this study is to develop a standardized test instrument to evaluate the information literacy of middle school students, and to verify the reliability and validity of the test instrument. For this purpose, this study selected factors that can show the information literacy and developed an information literacy test framework that was designed based on Guilford’s SOI model and Meeker’s SOI-LA test. The test instrument that was developed through this study is a 30-item Web-based multiple-choice test. This study administrated tests in middle school students (794 students joined), and analyzed difficulty, reliability, discrimination index, validity of tests, and reviewed tests items to qualify the standardized test. The cutoff score was also decided when using these tests as a diagnostic information literacy assessment.

Abstract

Wikipedia represents a revolutionary experiment in the sense that it allows anonymous Internet users to contribute, change, and edit Encyclopedia contents used by tens of millions of people. While a very popular information source on the Internet, because of its questionable information credibility and accuracy, citing Wikipedia articles is being regarded as a risky behavior for scholars. The present study identified 282 scholarly articles from Thomson Reuters’ Web of Science citation database that cite Wikipedia at least once. Out of the millions of articles indexed in Web of Science, the proportion of articles citing Wikipedia is extremely small. On the other hand, the numbers are showing a marked increase since 2011. Wikipedia citing articles are distributed in subject areas, such as library and information science, business, psychology, education, and communication more often than in other areas. The distribution of a total of 577 citations from 267 articles for which we were able to obtain full texts shows that Wikipedia is being cited mainly in studies of Wikipedia (139 citations, 24.1%) or as a ready reference source (331 citations, 57.4%). At the same time, about 15% of total citations turned out to be cases of potentially risky behaviors in which Wikipedia is being cited as a crucial basis or data source for study.

Abstract

Because of the increased interest in health, medical care, and wellness, the utilization of health-related information resources, especially those found on the Internet, has been rapidly increasing. In addition, despite encountering an increasing number of health and medical-related reference questions in public libraries, public librarians feel limitations in their ability to perform these types of reference services. Therefore, this study proposed the cooperative network system model for vitalizing CHI Services, meaning that all the related agencies, including public libraries, medical libraries, medical institutions, and the health and medical community collaboratively provide consumer health information service. This study presented in detail the key elements of the cooperation model, the subject of cooperation, target sources for cooperation, the content of cooperation, operations of CHI-providing sites, operations and roles of Cooperation Centers, and directions for cooperating with commercial institutions.
