Abstract

This article examines how to improve military library services by evaluating management and performance of 160 Korean military libraries in 2011. Results indicated that the average performance rate in entire areas was 59.4%. The ‘facility’ area and ‘inter-library cooperation’ area showed high performance rates (79.2% and 71.0% respectively). On the other hand, the ‘strategic management plan’ area and ‘support’ area showed relatively low performance rates (28.3% and 33.0% respectively). Results concluded that a strong commitment for strategic planning and execution by the authorities is required to enhance military library services in the future. Also, the implications of annual evaluation on military libraries should be taken accounted for improvement plans and ultimately lead to the establishment of revitalization policies for military library services.

Abstract

A collection development policy is the library’s master plan that provides library’s long/short-term plans. It also informs the community of the library’s commitment in collection development. However, in Korea, libraries which maintain such a policy are not yet to be easily found. Furthermore, due to increasing importance of electronic resources, libraries are gradually required to have electronic resource management policy that reflects a change in the information environment. The purpose of this study is to suggest a model electronic resource management policy in academic libraries. It derived and verified more than thirty preliminary elements from literature and case studies. The elements were modified and supplemented, and as a result, the selection criteria gained the highest marks. The findings can be applied for selecting the elements of digital collection development policy in the university library and reorganizing them so as to meet its peculiarities. This study, finally, presents a model that includes a guideline for the university library which will establish digital collection development policy.

Abstract

The power of human capital in a library is the main resource that determines the level of library services, which in turn should play a pivotal role in forming the intellectual power of the country. This research conducted a survey on the employment perspectives of LIS undergraduates, which resulted as follows. First, among the LIS undergraduates, 40% of students responded that their desire was to be employed in the library as librarians. Although there were some negative opinions regarding the working environment of the industry, the undergraduates appreciated the developmental possibilities. Second, the most desired task was working with cultural programs. Third, the respondents were satisfied with the current curriculum overall, acknowledging the extra need for job search support programs, which include career support, employment-related mentoring, and internships. Fourth, the main requirements for their future employability were perceived as grade point average, language skills, obtaining licenses, internship and apprenticeship experience, and career management. Fifth, influential factors on employment decision making were divided into two aspects: environmental and personal factors. The environmental factors included salary, welfare, opportunities in personal development, workplace environment, organizational culture, and development possibilities of the organization. The personal factors included fitness with personal aptitude, the level of knowledge and technology in the job industry, social norms and acknowledgement, rewarding opportunities with their major, and location of job.

Abstract

The consumption through e-journal consortia makes researchers locate and use academic resources and information extensively with comparatively cheap costs. This study analyzed and investigated substantive benefits of the big deal contracts for e-journal subscriptions in terms of efficient information use. In other words, this study compare concretely the differences in efficiency of using information between large-size institutions and small-size institutions who participate in the e-journal big deal contracts. This study suggests solutions for the problems which occur persistently and repeatedly in the big deal and new counter plans which can replace the current methods of big deal contracts in a long-term perspective by revealing the gaps of acquiring and using information by the size of participating institutions.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate job satisfaction level of employees working at special libraries by analyzing their affiliated institution and personal backgrounds. Results indicated that the job satisfaction level in private institutions was higher for ‘remuneration’, ‘promotion’, and ‘overall satisfaction’ in comparison to public counterparts. Also, employees working at institutions with independent libraries had higher level of satisfaction for ‘work itself’, ‘remuneration’ and ‘co-workers’ in comparison to those working in non-independent libraries. In terms of employment status, satisfaction level for ‘remuneration’ and ‘promotion’ was high among permanent employees, whereas ‘superior and supervisor’ was relatively higher among temporary employees. In terms of position, supervisors had higher level of satisfaction for ‘remuneration’, ‘job system’, ‘promotion’ and ‘overall satisfaction’ in comparison to non-supervisors. Employees with degrees in library and information science had higher level of satisfaction for ‘work itself’, ‘job system’, ‘promotion’ and ‘institutional environment’ in comparison to non-majors. This study clarified desires and emotions of employees working at special libraries and eliminated obstacles to higher job satisfaction. These findings may have implications for the improvement of work efficiency in libraries.

Abstract

This study performs opinion mining of newspaper articles, based on topics extracted by topic modeling. We analyze the attitudes of the news media towards a major issue of ‘presidential election’, assuming that newspaper partisanship is a kind of opinion. We first extract topics from a large collection of newspaper texts, and examine how the topics are distributed over the entire dataset. The structure and content of each topic are then investigated by means of network analysis. Finally we track down the chronological distribution of the topics in each of the newspapers through time serial analysis. The result reveals that both the liberal newspapers and the conservative newspapers exhibit their own tendency to report in line with their adopted ideology. This confirms that we can count on opinion mining technique based on topics in order to analyze opinion in a reliable fashion.

Abstract

This study tries to develop the so-called LCSI (Library Customer Satisfaction Index) Lite for public library which can be used easily in the fields as a simplified model. Its conceptual model is developed from the former research about library service quality and customer satisfaction. Based on the analyses on the twenty Delphi-type AHP questionnaires both from the library researchers and from the public library practitioners, and on the analysis and testing of the structural equation model using the data from the more than 800 user questionnaires, it suggests a model which consists of total 15 items - namely 8 items for service quality (2 for personnel, 4 for library resources and services, 2 for facilities and environment), 3 items for customer satisfaction, and 2 items for loyalty. Library Satisfaction Index for public library will be calculated by the sum total of service quality (50%), customer satisfaction (40%), and loyalty (10%).
